When we consume foods containing tryptophan, such as milk and corn, our bodies convert the tryptophan into serotonin, one of five “happy” hormones generated by our brains to lessen depression and improve our ability to concentrate and focus.

However, without carbohydrates, there will be no tryptophan to convert into serotonin. Therefore the fewer carbohydrates we take, the more irritable and agitated we become.

On the plus side, there are numerous healthy carbohydrates that can be consumed without weight gain. Whole-grain toast, brown rice, apples, and sweet potatoes, to name a few, are good examples.

In addition, when you don’t consume enough calories to support you throughout the day, your body will begin to break down muscle mass before fat cells since muscles contain the protein your body requires. Iron is a crucial mineral that distributes oxygen throughout the body, allowing it to function optimally and maintain health. Therefore, when your body discovers insufficient red blood cells to transport the oxygen it requires, it begins to signal that it lacks the energy to keep you going throughout the day. A lack of iron in your diet can result in exhaustion.

Chronic illnesses
